Malthael was a former member and leader of the Angiris Council. Once the Archangel of Wisdom, he became the Angel of Death.

As with the rest of the Heavenly Host and its leaders, Malthael participated in the Great Conflict and played a crucial role in it. He was the first leader of the Angiris Council (and its eldest member) and through it, angelkind as a whole. According to Itherael, when the angels were young, Malthael was the one who found the Eye of Anu in Pandemonium and named it the Worldstone. Malthael himself developed a deep affinity with the stone, valuing it even more than other angels.
